Using FAM/LAM while Breastfeeding

your name and/or age? 28 on Monday
how old is/are your nursling/s? 3mos tomorrow
any other kids? Nope
new to fam/nfp? No; we used FAM for 20 cycles TTA before successfully TTC in Cycle 21
any signs of a cycle yet? Yes; mild spotting for ~4 days, about one of my average follicular phases ago. If my cycle's really back, I'll probably see a temp shift in the next few days. Whee.

your name and/or age? Kelsey, 21

how old is/are your nursling/s? Mason is 10, almost 11 months

any other kids? Nope

new to fam/nfp? Brand new actually!!

any signs of a cycle yet? Nope, although I've only been off of hormonal birth control for about 3 weeks...so we'll see.

anything else?  I am a working momma who just graduated from college, at least i'm no longer a working/school attending momma.  I'm nervous and excited for NFP.  We really can't afford to have another baby just yet, I have to fit into my wedding dress in October! But I'm unsure because we've never used NFP before so I'm not sure what to look for as a true return of fertility.

signs of returning fertility? [Aug. 24th, 2010|01:25 pm]
Using FAM/LAM while Breastfeeding

DD is 14 months, and we are still BF on demand at home, and I pump once at work. I haven't started officially charting again yet, but  kind of keep an eye on my CM. One day a couple weeks ago, I had an episode of pink-tinged mucous, then nothing for a few days. I attributed it to DH and I DTD for the first time in a few weeks the night before it happened. But then it happened again about 5-6 days later (with no deed-doing involved) and nothing since then. (I wish I would have written down the dates so I remember for sure when it was... I think the last episode was maybe a week ago?)
So, I"m just wondering, when cycles return is it common for it to just be a touch of spotting here and there for a while first, or does AF usually just start right up?

When did fertility return? [Mar. 31st, 2010|01:08 pm]

DD is 9.5 months old and I have not started my cycles back yet. She is BF on demand when I'm home, and I pump usually 2, sometimes 3 times a day when I work, in addition to 3-4 nursing sessions on workdays (morning and 2-3 times in the evening.)
I haven't been great at remembering to check my CM daily, but I do at least 2-3 times a week and it's always sticky and cervix is low and firm. The only other thing I noticed is that my lower abdomen feels bloated/crampy, like AF is about to show, for a few days at a time on and off for the past several months. But I do have lower back/pelvis issues so maybe it's just general discomfort from that.
Anyway, DH is paranoid that I'm pg and don't even know it because of my lack of cycles. I did test at 3 months and 6 months pp just to be sure, but haven't since then (but I'm also not having any sympoms of pg either, so I'm not worried.) so we were just curious when cycles usually return, and also how often women get a warning period before return of fertility. And also is the cramping feeling on and off normal?
eta: I do have PCOS and have never had regular periods, and it took 3 years to concieve DD if that makes a difference. (although I've had a rash of friends recently that had trouble concieving their first get pg unexpectedly soon after.... )

how old is/are your nursling/s? Just about 2 months (born Jan 20, 2010). Her name is Rhiannon, though we call her Rain for short. ;-)

any other kids? Yes, 3 year old son named Seamus.

new to fam/nfp? No. I used FAM for TTC Rain. I am new to it as a form of birth control though.

any signs of a cycle yet? Eh, sort of. I have patches of fertile quality CM, but have not ovulated yet. I think my body keeps TRYING to ovulate, but then doesn't because of the breastfeeding.

anything else? Here's my chart. :-)  We are exclusively breastfeeding (no formula) and on demand.  However, we do use a pacifier here and there.

Nice to meet everyone! :-D

anovulatory spotting... again. :P [Jan. 28th, 2010|10:04 am]

everything I'm reading basically says you have to consider any bleeding (and looking up "spotting" just refers me to bleeding. grr...) that isn't menstruation as potentially fertile. is this true even if a) I've never had spotting with ovulation, and b) when I do have spotting, it's with an anovulatory cycle?

basic run down: I returned to fertility in july after giving bith in november 2008 (I'm still breastfeeding).

in july I ovulated prior to having my first period in early august.

after which I started spotting for several days, starting on day 16 of the "cycle" and ending around day 20. there was never a temperature shift. day 29 started heavier spotting or light bleeding, which I considered a fake period and started a new chart.

this next cycle was a true ovulatory cycle, with a temp shift on day 17 and no spotting. period began day 29.

following month was another anovulatory with spotting and no temp shift. this time it was a shorter "cycle" as I started a new chart when the spotting turned to heavier bleeding on day 23.

next cycle was normal again. and the next two after that. so I thought I was done with the anovulatory cycles and back to normal fertility... until this month.

I've got the same pattern of spotting and no temp shift. I'm currently on day 23, and my 8th day of spotting. my cervix is firm and tightly closed. I *know* I'm probably not going to ovulate this cycle. but I've been unable anywhere to find anything that says it's safe to establish a pattern of anovulatory cycles with spotting (I have both TCOYF and "the art of natural family planning"). everything just says you can determine if it's anovulatory by taking temps (in which case, I would have to wait until everything ended and I established a true dry day, or until my "period" starts) or doesn't address the issue at all.

my real question is, would you consider this "safe" based on my previous patterns? or should I just wait it out?

I have a brand new baby (1.5 weeks old) who is already sleeping for at least one 6 hour stretch each night. She is puting on weight like a champ so the ped isn't concerned about that and has told me to let her sleep when she wants. I do try and rouse her at abut 4 hours in bt NOTHING works - taking the diaper off, turning the lights on, singing, cold washcloth . . . this child is a sleeper!

I'm assuming this means I can't rely on LAM at all. I'm assuming that fertility is going to return with a vengence. I just can't wrap my head around having to temp already. Do I really start temping now? Do I temp at her first wake-up - the post 6 hour one? It's usually around the same time each day so I guess that would work.

Ugh - breastfeeding is supposed to suppress this! I haven't gotten lucky with any of my children!

hey ladies.
i am nursing my two-year old and my three month old (exclusively). with my first child, the two-year old, my period came back twelve months postpartum, and i was pregnant again 15 months postpartum.

i have heard that a woman's period returns more quickly with each subsequent child's birth. any info about this? i am wondering if i should anticipate a postpartum period earlier this time around...

time to temp? [Dec. 10th, 2009|11:01 pm]

DD will be 6 months next week. I haven't gotten a postpartum AF yet. I've been kind of sporatic about checking my CM but I suppose I'd better get more consistent with doing that pretty soon. Do I need to start checking my temp starting at 6 months or can I wait until I get an AF?
